Certification in Humanitarian Supply Chain Management (CHSCM)

Guidance for prospective CHSCM candidates

Introduction

Fritz Institute in partnership with the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport UK (CILT-UK) is now offering two qualifications for those working in humanitarian logistics – the Certification in Humanitarian Logistics (CHL) and the Certification in Humanitarian Supply Chain Management (CHSCM).

Selecting the right course of study

This document provides guidance for those candidates who wish to enrol on one of the two humanitarian qualifications offered. The qualifications have been designed for two different target audiences, and you do not have to complete CHL before enrolling on the CHSCM course. However it is very important that you select the right level of qualification for you. The descriptions of the two qualifications given below should help you to decide. In addition, before enrolling in the CHSCM course, please fill out the questionnaire at the end of this guide and submit to Logistics Learning Alliance (details below).  You may also contact Logistics Learning Alliance, Fritz Institute or the CILT(UK) for further information.

Who is the target audience for CHL?

The Certification in Humanitarian Logistics is aimed typically at candidates who are working at operational positions with the field of humanitarian logistics.

It is also a suitable level of qualification for those wanting to enter the area of humanitarian logistics for the first time and who have relevant supply chain experience from the commercial sector.

Normally you will be involved in carrying out the functions of warehousing, transportation and fleet management and procurement at an operational level.

Who is the target audience for the CHSCM?

The Certification in Humanitarian Supply Chain Management has been developed for a target audience of humanitarian logisticians who are involved in the management and coordination of activities being carried out by other logisticians. Different humanitarian organisations have different structures and roles, however, it is expected that the target audience will have prior experience in providing operational level logistics support in a humanitarian situation.  They will now be in (or realistically aspire to move into) roles managing and coordinating complex logistics and supply chain activities.

What level will you be operating at to benefit from the CHSCM?

The audience for this qualification are people who are operating at a tactical level and who are engaged in planning, resourcing and managing the supply chain and the implementation of supply chain strategy. To carry out these activities these people will be managing and/or leading other logisticians who are performing activities and operating at the operational level.

What kind of things will you be doing in your job?

The role typically requires people to:

This role requires people to be knowledgeable about how the supply chain provides support to humanitarian operations and also have the knowledge and understanding to lead and manage others.

What prior knowledge will you need before starting the CHCSM?

It is expected that people carrying out the role and studying for the Certification will have knowledge in the supply chain activities of:

These activities are therefore not included in the material for this level of the Certification.

To help you determine if CHSCM is the right course for you, please refer to the attached questionnaire.
