The need for humanitarian assistance due to
natural or man-made disasters has increased.
Humanitarian organizations are tasked with
getting the right goods, to the right people, at
the right time and lives are hanging in the
balance. Logistics is a critical component to
the success of the ultimate goal of all humanitarian
programs- to save and improve the lives
and dignity of beneficiaries.
The demands for fast and efficient logistics
support require professional logisticians to
not only keep abreast of current best practice,
but also commit themselves to a permanent
cycle of learn, improve and grow.
Supply chain knowledge must be systematically
maintained at the highest possible level
and having the skills alone may not be sufficient.
Holders of professional logistics qualifications
have a tangible demonstration of their
ability.
The Certification in Humanitarian
Logistics (CHL) was developed in collaboration
with an inter-agency committee consisting
primarily of the Heads of Logistics from
eight humanitarian organizations. The qualification
was designed to meet their requirements
for trained, skilled humanitarian logistics
professionals.
Who should participate?
The Certification in Humanitarian Logistics is
ideal for people who are working or will
work within humanitarian organizations in
supply chain functions at the operational
level. There are no academic pre-requisites;
however the candidate must be fluent in English.
CHL is a distance learning course that can
be taken anywhere in the world with access to
a computer and periodic email.
What will they learn?
The program is comprised of seven mandatory
units that cover the entire supply chain including:
Humanitarian Supply Chains, Procurement,
Warehouse & Inventory, Transport,
Fleet Management, Import/Export and Managing
a Humanitarian Supply Chain Response.
How will they learn?
The Certification in Humanitarian Logistics is
competence based. Participants are therefore
required to apply the knowledge they have
gained in a humanitarian environment. The
innovative learning process is centered on the
case study of a simulated relief operation,
learning materials and interactive coaches.
Candidates are presented with a series of challenging
objectives, reflecting the outcome they
are working on. The achievement of these
objectives will enable candidates to demonstrate
how they will improve the logistics elements
of an operation supporting the delivery
of a humanitarian program. They will be required
to undertake detailed analysis of the
current and anticipated requirements, develop
options to meet those requirements and finally
implement the best option.
Throughout the program candidates have the
support of their coaches who are experienced
at operating in emergency environments.
Candidates should expect to take 18 months
to complete the programme, studying 5
hours a week. During the process a portfolio
of evidence of competence is collated which
will be submitted for assessment and verification
to the awarding body, Fritz Institute/
CILT-UK.
Logistics Learning Alliance is the CILT-UK
approved learning centre.
