HUMANITARIAN LOGISTICS CERTIFICATION PROGRAM - Learning Methodology

The Certification courses use the innovative 'competence model' approach, which emphasizes application of skills, as opposed to the examination of knowledge. Through the course, candidates (or students) develop the required competencies through the performance of tasks. The learning process uses a unique combination of learning materials, a simulated case study environment based on first-hand experience in many humanitarian aid operations, and access to live coaches.

The courses are all 100% distance learning, which allows candidates to start at any time and work at their own pace. This methodology is especially effective for individuals working the demanding humanitarian world.

The Competence Models

A competence model for each course was defined by a team of senior logA competence model for each course was defined by a team of senior logisticians and experts representing the primary actors in humanitarian logistics. These senior teams agreed the objectives of each of the courses and then defined the required competencies of the graduates.

Competence models for each of the courses are available here for download:

  • CHL Competence Model - defined by ICRC, IRC, MSF-Holland, Oxfam-GB, Save the Children-US, UNICEF, UNHCR, and WFP
  • CHSCM Competence Model - defined by ICRC, IRC, MSF-Holland, Oxfam-GB, Save the Children-US, UNICEF, UNHCR, and WFP
  • MedLog Competence Model - defined by ICRC, IFRC, MSF-Switzerland, WFP, and WHO, with inputs from IMC, Merlin, Oxfam-GB, and UNFPA

Scenario-Based

At the start of the course, the candidate (or student) is inserted into a reality-based scenario in which they have to advise on and manage supply chain and logistics functions. The tasks they are requested to do are designed to facilitate the development of and demonstration that they have the required skills, as defined by the competence model.

Because it is based on real-life experiences in providing the logistics support to humanitarian operations, the case study scenario provides a realistic environment that enables students to apply knowledge and make decisions about real world problems, but in a safe setting.

One-on-One Coaching

Throughout the course, which is delivered by the Logistics Learning Alliance, candidates are supported by individual learning coaches experienced in logistics. These coaches also assess candidates' assignments and determine when they are ready to proceed to the next task or unit. At the end of the course, the students' portfolio of work is collated and submitted for assessment and verification by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) - UK.
