Children of Kargil Nagar
Thiruvallur, Tamil Nadu

Children in the families affected by the tsunami in Chennai's coastal areas had a rough deal. They had to live out in the open on streetside, then in crammed, hot temporary shelters in Kargil Nagar outside Chennai, near an industrial dumpyard. The shelters were flooded in the summer rain. Still Shakuntala and her friends were all smiles when this photo was taken. Then a series of fires destroyed these shelters. The families lived in plastic tents, only to be flooded again in the monsoon rain and shifted to public buildings and relative's homes - disrupting the children's schooling and studies aided by local NGOs. NGOs are now building new shelters after much delay and 10 months of uncertainty.
